Dancing her way to the top

Having a passion for something is important for Chevals co-captain Whitney Waugh (’10), who spends a majority of her time dedicated to the art of dance. Her time spent improving and perfecting each move is highly plausible.

Waugh has been taking dance lessons since first grade, ending in ninth grade. From tenth grade up, the Stillwater Chevals Dance Team had been her calling.

It did not take much to convince Waugh at a young age of her aptitude for dance.

"My mom just put me in dance, she danced when she was younger so I think she just wanted me to try it and I loved it," said Waugh.

Waugh has a background with diversity in the classes she has taken for dance. Different genres of dance she has participated in include the following: jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical, hip hop and contemporary.

Being one of the co-captains of the Chevals for her final two years in high school has been rewarding for Waugh. Her long-lasting memories of Chevals include meeting some great girls, getting to dance at games and staying in shape.

"Dancing is the only thing I do. I love dancing; I find it very relaxing. When I’m not dancing with the Chevals or teaching dance, I try to take classes in the summer," said Waugh.

Beyond dancing through the school, Waugh auditioned to perform in a show last summer, where she was chosen to perform certain dances and go to different workshops.

She also auditions for the Minn. State Mankato dance team last April. This competitive audition determined her acceptance to the team.

"It was one of the hardest auditions in my life, but I still made the team! They compete with other colleges and go to nationals in Daytona Beach," added Waugh.

For her future plans, Waugh is going to Mankato and majoring in her passion. It was necessary that she would audition for the dance program in order to major in the subject.

After college, I haven’t decided if I want to travel with dance or something else. It 9is still up in the air," said Waugh, explaining how she ahs a wide variety of options for plans in her future past college.

"Dancing is my passion and I hope to dance until I physically can’t anymore," said Waugh, summing up her main area of interest.

Waugh’s experiences in dance have broadened her horizons, gradually forming a great path ahead of her with a firm foundation built from hard work and efforts to reach high goals.
