Joan Beaver says goodbye after 39 years

Liz Curley
Editor-in-Chief

As the year comes to a close, students and teachers will
pack up their belongings and prepare for another year
of school. Classrooms will be locked up and Stillwater Area High
School will get ready for the students arrival in the fall; and although
not much will be different, history teacher Joan Beaver
will not be returning after 39 years of teaching.

"I will miss my colleagues and students, but not grading papers," said
Beaver. "One of my favorite memories was holding seminars for the
history departments in 1987 on the bicentennial of the constitution,"
added Beaver.

After 39 years of teaching Beaver, who at first taught at St. Paul, plans on traveling after her retirement.

"I would really like to travel to Camp Vancouver, Italy, India and other national parks out west," said Beaver. "I’d love to be a traveler rather than a tourist."

For the majority of her career, Beaver has taught in District 834 and has also spent time teaching in Bosnia.

"I did some teaching in Bosnia about government, and find it very interesting to have the opportunity to connect with people," said Beaver.

With her retirement, Beaver will be able to accomplish all of her goals and although she will leave the high school with an imprint on many students and colleagues, she will take with her the memories she made and lessons she learned along the way.
